Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
