The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
